Harvest Fair and Puppet Show
A free puppet show was scheduled for Nov 4 at 12:30 at the Old
Stone Church in Upper Saddle River NJ during the Harvest Fair
which is open from 10:00 until 3:00 PM. Lindsey Strasser (left)
will assist Frieda Gates (right) with the Punch and Judy
Puppets.
Some of the “Fair Ladies” viewing their crafts are (L to R) Jean
Toppel, Rusty Richards, Mildred Marson, Barbara Hendricks and
Mary Crawford.
The traditional Punch and Judy
Show is given by Frieda Gates. Mrs. Gates, a painter and
painting teacher, designed and constructed the puppets which are
large, beautiful, humorous renditions of “the real thing” that
originated in Italy some 400 years ago.
The puppet theater and children’s
viewing area will be on the stage in full view of the parents
who may browse the fair tables displaying merchandise for sale.
The Fair, which runs from 10 AM until 3 PM, will present hand
knitted and hand sewn items, holiday decorations, children’s
crafts, gifts, baked goods, apple pies, funnel cakes, jewelry,
gently used items, homemade hot soups and sandwiches. There will
also be a professional sketch artist who will create personal
sketches to capture children or adults in the moment.
Mrs. Gates of Airmont NY is
assisted by Lindsey Strasser, also of Airmont and a student in
Spring Valley High School. The theater and props were
constructed by the late Mr. David Gates, former chairman of the
Department of Visual Communication at Pratt Institute.
Mrs. Gates will also display her
collection of puppets from many countries of the world. She
explains that the character of Punch began as a marionette
puppet, but for the past 200 years he has been exclusively a
glove puppet. Mrs. Gates has studied with master puppeteer Bill
Baird and she performed with the Hudson Valley Vagabond
Puppets. She is also the writer of many children’s books.

UPPER SADDLE RIVER, NEW JERSEY
The Saddle River Reformed Church, the Old Stone Church of
Upper Saddle River, New Jersey, will sponsor a vocal
recital of operatic, instrumental and popular music,
“Songs and Secrets of the Night,” on Saturday evening,
April 22nd at 7:30pm. The performers,
soprano Jennifer Cece Bellon, collaborating pianist
Rozanne Sullivan, and guest clarinetist Frank Kolodzieski,
will explore the emotions, actions, and often-nefarious
schemes that evolve under cover of night. The program will
feature works by Claude Debussy, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart,
Gerald Finzi, Carlisle Floyd, Joaquin Turina, and other
classical and contemporary composers.
Ms. Cece Bellon was raised in Upper Saddle River and is a
Westwood resident. She is a past winner of the NJ-NATS
vocal competition and has appeared in musical theater
productions at the Papermill Playhouse, the Dramatists
Guild in New York City, and at many other venues.
Additionally, she has performed various operatic roles in
the tri-state area, and teaches piano and voice. Mr.
Kolodzieski of Bound Brook has recorded six albums with
the Polka Family Band, three of which were nominated for
Grammy Awards. With them, he has performed twice at
Carnegie Hall and has toured throughout the U.S. and in
Poland. He continues to perform jazz, polka and
contemporary music with other bands, both locally and
nationally. Ms. Sullivan, a resident of Upper Saddle
River, is the Director of Music at the Old Stone Church.
She has worked extensively as a musical director in
theater and cabaret in New Jersey and New York, and has
provided accompaniment to many vocalists and
instrumentalists, including the reknowned Irish
entertainer Carmel Quinn. She is a past recipient of the
Bigbee Award for her musical direction of Falsettos
at the Old Library Theater in Fair Lawn.
The recital will be held in the sanctuary of the historic
Old Stone Church, located at the corner of Old Stone
Church Road and East Saddle River Road. Proceeds from the
evening's performance will support the Church's building
restoration fund. Tickets for the performance are $10 and
may be purchased at the door. For more information, call

Both
Services
This has been a
very successful year for the ministry and fellowship of
our congregation because of the strong support our members
and friends have made through their support in time,
treasure, and talent. Be with us on Nov. 13 as we
celebrate that success and look forward to 2006.
See the
Newsletter page for details for the past year’s
programming and ministry you have supported.
2005 *
Stewardship * 2006
It may seem
impossible, but we are fast approaching the end of our
fiscal year. Next month (Sunday, Nov. 13) we will be making
our pledges for 2006. But, before we do that,
please be sure your pledge is up to date. Last
year we were able to present a balanced budget because of
the increase in your pledges.
An important
part of that increase was the decision for each person to
pay their Classis Dues ($69.32) as a separate
item. Please be sure your pledge is current and you have
paid the annual classis dues. You can pay the dues by
simply using a pew envelope, marking it “Classis” and
placing it in the offering plate or send it the office.
Thanks for
the continuing contributions for the Gulf Hurricanes
Relief. We have raised over $3000!

The Old Stone
Church
Hosted the
Classis of the
Greater Palisades
Meeting
Held Thursday, October
20, 2005 at 6 pm
Local
congregations of the Reformed Church in America are
supervised by the Classis (Latin for “fleet”). Instead
of an individual who fills the “office” of Bishop, the
Reformed Church depends upon representatives from
neighboring Reformed congregations to exercise
administrative and doctrinal oversight. It is the
power of the classis to ordain ministers, judge disputes
within the congregation, and insure that the Gospel is being
preached.
The evening
was a tremendous success with upwards of 65 representatives
attending. The event began with a
meal at
6 pm in the Minnick Education Building, followed by Worship
in the Sanctuary that began at 7 pm. The
meeting started at 7:30 pm and adjourned at approximately 10
pm.
Members of the Old Stone Church Confirmation Class greeted
the representatives and attended the Worship service.
Thank you to all
the ladies who worked so hard to prepare the meal for the
event, and what a meal it was! The buffet included
sliced browned bratwurst, kielbasa in sauerkraut, oven baked
chicken, hot dogs, meatballs in marinara sauce, sliced red
potatoes, and red cabbage. Dessert included apple
crisp and vanilla ice cream.
Thank you to the Confirmation Class for
assisting in serving and the removal of dishes from the
tables.
Thank you to Elder John Seibert for representing our
Church at the Classis meeting.
Last, but not least, thank you to Pastor Fretz for managing
the entire event including much preparation required days in
advance of the program, right up until the meeting was
adjourned and the last representative left the Sanctuary.

Join in this annual tradition, whether you have been doing
it for years or this is the first time. Join in the great
food, fun conversation, and enjoyable games.
We begin the morning in worship
featuring our children and families sharing in the joy of
our faith in Jesus Christ through songs, hymns, and
praise.
Then we go to enjoy an old fashioned
church picnic under the shade of the great maple tree in
the front lawn of the parsonage. Hotdogs, chicken, and
salads, along with lemonade and iced tea.
IMPORTANT!
Plan to wear casual clothes (shorts are fine) to worship
and the picnic. This is to encourage the adults to join
the kids in the various games including; KICK BALL horseshoes, badminton, bocce… and if you are brave—water
balloons.
